IP vs analog cameras: the benefits of switching

Feb 28, 2026 · 5 min read · By INMOTICS Technology

Switching from analog to IP cameras is not just swapping hardware: it means moving to a sharper, more scalable and smarter security system. Let's see why.

Resolution and image

IP cameras offer megapixel and 4K resolutions, with enough detail to identify faces and license plates. Analog cameras are limited in sharpness, especially when you zoom in.

Cabling and scalability

An IP camera uses a single network cable with PoE, carrying data and power at once. Adding cameras is as simple as adding network points, with no separate coaxial and power cabling.

Smart analytics

IP video enables people and vehicle detection, counting, crossing lines and automatic alerts. The camera stops merely recording and starts to alert you when something matters.

Cost and migration

Analog is still cheaper per camera, but the IP system pays off more in the medium term. If you already have coax, a hybrid solution with encoders and an NVR lets you migrate in stages, without throwing away what you have invested.

For new projects, IP is almost always the best decision. For existing installations, the hybrid approach reduces costs during the transition.
