Cat 6 vs Cat 6A: which does your company need?
The cabling you choose defines the speed, reach and lifespan of your network. Cat 6 and Cat 6A are the most common options today, but they are not interchangeable: choosing well avoids re-cabling within a few years.
Category 6 (Cat 6)
Supports up to 1 Gbps at 100 meters and 10 Gbps over short distances (roughly 37 to 55 m). It operates at 250 MHz. It is economical and more than enough for most offices and standard workstations.
Category 6A (Cat 6A)
Supports 10 Gbps at 100 meters in full, at double the frequency (500 MHz). Its better shielding reduces alien crosstalk, making it ideal for dense, demanding environments.
Differences that matter
- Speed and distance: only Cat 6A guarantees 10G across the entire run.
- Thickness and handling: Cat 6A is thicker and requires a larger bend radius and conduit.
- Cost: 6A cable costs more, but the difference is usually smaller than re-cabling later.
- PoE: Cat 6A dissipates heat better under high-power PoE (PoE++).
- Future: it protects your investment against WiFi 6E, 4K cameras and higher bandwidth.
Which should you choose?
Choose Cat 6 for standard offices, tight budgets and links up to 1 Gbps. Choose Cat 6A for data centers, high WiFi access-point density, high-power PoE cameras and any project aiming for 10 Gbps.
