RETIE (the Technical Regulation for Electrical Installations) is the standard that governs the safety of every electrical installation in Colombia. Complying with it is not optional: it is a legal requirement to energize any project.
What exactly is RETIE?
Issued by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, RETIE sets the technical requirements that electrical installations must meet to guarantee the safety of people, animals, the environment and property. It applies to the generation, transmission, transformation, distribution and use of electrical power.
Its core objective is to prevent risks of electrical origin: electrocution, fires, explosions and equipment damage.
When is it mandatory?
The RETIE certificate is mandatory for:
- Every new installation, regardless of its size.
- Expansions or remodels that modify the existing installation.
- Connection to the grid operator: without a certificate, the utility will not energize the project.
What gets certified?
There are two complementary areas:
- Products: electrical materials and equipment must hold a product conformity certificate.
- Installation: an inspection body accredited by ONAC issues the assessment verifying that the work complies with the regulation.
Risks of not complying
- Inability to energize or legalize the project.
- Penalties and civil or criminal liability in the event of accidents.
- Higher risk of fires and failures that affect business continuity.
